What compels sports fans to post bullshit to Facebook groups five months before the season starts? What compels sports fans to engage in pointless arguments about which city’s team—a team they have nothing to do with—is the best when we’re going to have 17 weeks of games and four weeks of playoffs to find out which team is the best?

The same things that compel political fans to post bullshit about polls and argue about whether Trump “will” or “can’t” win the election 18 months from now, I guess. The same thing that compels the empty suits on ESPN to engage in these same pointless arguments. There’s 24 hours to fill, and there are a lot of bored people and procrastinating people.
